Description:
This sculptural gilt leather wastepaper basket is an Italian example of Neoclassical revival design from the 20th century, conceived in the form of tightly grouped book spines encircling a cylindrical body. The exterior is clad in richly textured leather, molded and tooled to simulate antique leather-bound volumes with raised bands, gilt titling, and classical ornamental devices, including fleur-de-lis and heraldic emblems. The overall effect evokes the refined intellectual atmosphere of historic Italian libraries and scholarly interiors.
The surface displays a warm, variegated palette of russet, sienna, and deep amber tones, enhanced by worn gilt highlights that lend depth and visual interest while suggesting age and patina. The scalloped rim and base further reinforce the illusion of stacked bindings, giving the piece a strong architectural presence and a distinctly decorative profile.
