About the Item

A beautifully sculptural Japanese bamboo hanakago (flower basket) with a distinctive rounded body and twisted handle. Expertly handwoven in a bold open-weave technique, this piece combines strength and fluidity, giving it both visual and tactile rhythm. The natural red-brown and blackened tones of the bamboo are achieved through traditional susutake (smoked bamboo) or madake with lacquer finish, creating subtle tonal depth and contrast. The irregular, organic form is intentional and adds to its wabi-sabi charm. Likely made in the Taisho to early Showa period (c. 1920–1940), this basket would have been used in chabana (tea ceremony flower arrangements) or as a decorative interior object. It remains in very good vintage condition, with minimal wear appropriate to its age.
