About the Item
Wild and tumultuous, this sculptural bamboo form is an early 20th century flower basket (hanakago) designed especially for ikebana, the Japanese art of floral arrangement. Masterfully woven from strips of smoked bamboo (susutake) with amber color, the basket is highly textured and full of movement, the weft interlaced with twists and turns that recall the untamed beauty of nature.
The basket has a squat, rounded form anchored by broad bamboo strips that curve diagonally across the body. Two small, twisted handles flank the shoulders and a simple bamboo lashing finishes the rim. Used to contrast and anchor delicate flowers, this ikebana basket is a beautiful example of a traditional Japanese art form.
