About the Item
Nantucket Cocktail Purse by Jose Formoso Reyes, circa 1950, a very early Nantucket diminutive oval woven purse made during the first few years Reyes was making Nantucket baskets, having a cane weave on rattan staves, pine top and bottom plates, carved swing handle fastened with copper rivets, and a carved wooden peg clasp; signed on the bottom Made In Nantucket, Jose Formoso Reyes with image of island.
This is a rare, extremely early example of one of Reyes' highly desirable diminutive "cocktail" purses. It remains in excellent condition, with a perfect warm honey patina. This piece is ideal for those who prefer to not have any bone or ivory mounted on their basket, or who wish to export their purse to another land.
Jose Reyes (1902 - 1980) was born in the Philippines and moved to Nantucket immediately following World War II in 1947. He met Mitchy Ray, the last person on island still making Nantucket baskets at that time, and learned the craft. Within a few years Jose adapted the traditional Lightship basket form to a purse by adding a lid and a swing handle, launching the modern era in the Nantucket basket saga. While Reyes began making his purses in the very late 1940s, he did not begin dating them until 1960. Reyes remains highly revered and collected as a great innovator and the inventor of the Nantucket Purse.

Mattapoisett Basket, by Gladys Ellis, circa 1940s
Located in Nantucket, MA
Early Vintage Mattapoisett Basket, likely by Gladys Ellis, Mid 20th Century, a hand-crafted basket modeled after a Nantucket purse, having a flat oval "clamshell" lid hinged above an oval body, made of hand-stitched longleaf pine needles and raffia in braided and lace-like arrangements, with two braided raffia handles, a stitched hinge, and a silk lined interior, not signed. This is one of her very early baskets made before she started adding ivory tops and fixtures.
The basket remains in strong original condition with no discernible breaks to the weave. There may have once been a loop closure at one point.
Measures: 5-1/4 in H x 9 in L x 6-1/4 in W
A local adaptation of a Nantucket basket first designed by Gladys Ellis (Mattapoisett: 1917 – 2011). The Mattapoisett basket is made in the shape and nature of a Nantucket basket, but uses southern yellow or longleaf pine needles and raffia coiled and sewn on a frame with a lace-like effect, often incorporating scrimshaw panels on the top and sides, sometimes as well as clasps and handle knobs...
