About the Item
Charming vintage leaf shaped solid brass sculpture was created as a part of a series of botanical leaf sculptures, sculpted by Oskar Hansen and commercially produced by The Virginia Metalcrafters company. Finely detailed castings of the leaf sculptures in the series were done in brass and sometimes in bronze.
The sculpture is marked with the Virginia Metalcrafter's logo, a little Betty Lamp (a type of oil lamp) hallmark, Copyright 1951, VA Metalcrafters, and the name - Lemon Leaf, with the model number. The heavy, substantial sculpture is supported by 3 brass feet, allowing it to be used as a tray, a decorative dish, or a catchall.
The sculpture is in very good vintage condition, and is ready to be displayed; it would make a great gift to a collector or a design enthusiast and a great display piece on a shelf or a table, and make a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Mid Century Modern, Organic Modern, Hollywood Regency, Glam, Scandinavian Modern, Japandi, Transitional, Collected, or Contemporary.
Virginia Metalcrafters had its first beginnings with the founding of the Waynesboro Stove Company in 1890 by William J. Loth; it closed in 2006. Within the tradition of American decorative arts, the company specialized in high-quality historic reproductions of authentic designs and products that were hand cast in bronze, iron, aluminum, brass, and pewter, using sandcasting, a method similar to what colonial-era craftsmen practiced. Nationwide many museums and historic sites, such as Historic Charleston, Marineland, Monticello, Mount Vernon, Mystic Seaport, the National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP), Natural Bridge, Historic Newport, Old Salem, Old Sturbridge Village (OSV), Silver Springs, Skyline Drive, the Smithsonian Institution, Colonial Williamsburg, and the Winterthur Museum, among others, collaborated with Virginia Metalcrafters on their souvenir items.
Oskar J. W. Hansen (1892-1973) was an important Norway born American sculptor, best known for his monumental Art Deco masterpieces of the Hoover Dam. In 1930s Oskar received a large number of prominent sculpture commissions, including his Wings statue the lobby of Rand Tower in Minneapolis, the Hinsdale Victory Monument in Illinois, busts for the Editorial Hall of Fame, and was selected as the sculptor for Hoover Dam, one of the largest engineering and construction projects at the time. Hansen designed multiple sculptures for the site, including bas reliefs for the dam's two elevator towers, memorial plaques to Dr. Mead and the construction workers who died during the construction of the dam, and most prominently, his "Winged Figures of the Republic" bronze statues and the terrazzo 26,000-year "Star Map" they sit on. Starting in 1948, Hansen began designing a series of dozens of brass leaf trays for Virginia Metalcrafters.

Roman Erlikh
Roman Erlikh is a professional woodworker with over 20 years’ experience. Roman Erlikh Studio creates bespoke and limited edition contemporary furniture and art objects. His first furniture collections were inspired by traditional Art Deco and Biedermeier styles interpreted through a modern lifestyle demands. Stepping away from merely utilitarian view of everyday objects, his recent collections are filled with meaningful textual context while incorporating traditional and modern woodworking techniques. Roman is using practical function as a common denominator to create emotionally charged art objects, blurring the boundary between art and function. While appreciating possibilities of ordinary materials, Roman is developing new mixed media multilayered composite varnishes and utilizes decorative gilding and mica veneer to actively engage ambient light, giving an additional aspect to relation of his objects to their environment. The decision to work in custom format was based on environmental concerns and opposition to culture of mass production and pure consumerism. The choice of materials was heavily influenced by sustainability and environmental concerns. All objects are made locally in the Brooklyn Navy Yard workshop. Elimination of storage and transportation needs for mass-produced furniture in lieu of creating a custom made objects on demand allows us to reduce waste of materials and energy.
