About the Item

A substantial 1970s Murano glass centerpiece bowl by Alfredo Barbini, hand-crafted in Italy. Formed in the signature shell-like silhouette synonymous with vintage Murano art glass, the piece was expertly hand-shaped while the glass remained hot, resulting in a fluid, curved rim that evokes organic movement and mid-century sculptural design. The body is composed of richly toned brown Murano glass, subtly layered with a deep purple glass overlay. The interplay between these two tones shifts with the light—at times appearing richly earthen, at others revealing a deep violet undertone—an effect typical of Barbini’s nuanced approach to glass coloration. The surface is laced with a refined swirl of copper aventurine, a hallmark Murano technique in which metallic particles are suspended within the glass. These fine inclusions catch the light with a delicate, controlled shimmer, adding depth and quiet luminosity to the bowl’s dark palette. Impressively scaled at 25.5 cm wide, 21 cm deep, and 8 cm high, the bowl functions beautifully as a Murano decorative bowl, a sculptural art glass centerpiece, or an oversized vide poche for a console or coffee table. The thickness and weight of the glass speak to the quality of its hand-blown construction, offering both visual and material substance. A fine example of Alfredo Barbini’s Murano glasswork from the 1970s, this piece remains in very good vintage condition, with no chips or cracks. Minor surface wear is present, consistent with age and respectful handling.
