About the Item

This elegant alabaster circular bowl is carved evenly throughout with thin walls displaying a beautiful translucence when exposed to direct light. It features high curving sides, a gently inward sloping rim, and a rounded base. Rich caramel bands run through the soft beige and creme colored stone. Notes Shallow dishes and bowls such as this were likely used as serving and dining vessels. Alabaster was a very popular material for carving, especially in the production of bowls, dishes and jars which were used for a variety of purposes. This is largely due to both it's beautiful warm glow and its soft porous qualities which made it far easier to work with in comparison to materials such as marble. Provenance Alton Edward Mills (1882-1970), Switzerland. Thence by descent. Antiquities Christie's London, April 15, 2015. Private Collection, Los Angeles California.
