About the Item

French Art Deco Fruit Bowl by André Delatte, Jarville (Near Nancy), France, 1920s. A stunning example of French Art Deco glass, this center fruit bowl was crafted by the renowned André Delatte in the 1920s. Made from mottled glass, the piece displays the exquisite artistry and technical mastery for which Delatte is celebrated. The bowl is signed “ADelatte Nancy” (see photo), confirming its authenticity and origin. Width: 19.9" (50.5 cm) Height: 9.4" (23.8 cm) Depth: 10.4" (26.5 cm) André Delatte (1887–1953) was born in Châtenois, Vosges, France. Initially pursuing a career in banking, Delatte’s passion for glass emerged after visiting the studios of the Muller Brothers, leading him to study chemistry and eventually dedicate his life to glassmaking. In 1919, he opened a studio in Nancy, decorating pieces for Muller Frères, and by 1921 had established his first furnace in Jarville, employing talented artisans, many from Daum’s glassworks. Delatte’s company, Verreries de l’Est, quickly rose to prominence, producing highly sought-after Art Deco glass that reflected the elegance and modernity of the era. His talent for both design and business allowed him to assemble a team that created some of the most iconic French glass of the 1920s and 1930s. By 1926, his glassworks employed around 60 artisans, with a studio headquarters at Quai Ligier in Nancy. Despite his success, economic pressures and imports from Eastern Europe led to the closure of his Nancy operations in 1933. This rare fruit bowl exemplifies Delatte’s mastery of form and color in Art Deco glass, making it a significant collectible for enthusiasts of French decorative arts and early 20th-century design.
