About the Item

This ceramic bowl dates back to the late 12th century, during the Byzantine Empire (Eastern Roman Empire). The Byzantine Empire was the Eastern Roman Empire, established in 330 AD by Roman Emperor Constantine I and established Constantinople (now Istanbul) as its capital. It continued to exist for over 1,000 years after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, thriving as a center of culture, art, religion, and trade. From the 9th to 11th centuries, the Byzantine Empire's economic activity and culture spread widely beyond its borders, exponentially increasing in number during this period. In addition to the capital, Constantinople, countless ruins are known, including those in Corinth and Athens in Greece and Otranto in southern Italy, and vast quantities of pottery and pottery fragments have been excavated from the wide area that comprised the trading sphere of the time. This bowl is made using the so-called "inscribed pottery" technique, in which a thick layer of white engraving is applied to a reddish clay body, and then, before drying, a fish design is engraved into it with a sharp tool. While designs from the first half of the 12th century were often detailed and featured bands of engraved lines around the interior edges, this piece features bold, flowing lines depicting swimming fish. This type of composition is characteristic of late 12th-century pottery, and this is clearly evident in this piece. (We have also included references from Japanese art books. A black-and-white photograph is included with this item.) The engraving is applied to the clay body while it is still slightly damp, and the inscription is added. After firing in this state, a lead glaze is applied and the piece is fired again at a slightly lower temperature. The overall piece has a soft luster and deep color. Most vessels of this type are undecorated on the exterior. Traces of soil, shells, and minerals that have accumulated over the years have created a dignified appearance. The rugged yet beautiful scenery is unique to excavated items. This piece comes in a special paulownia wood box with an appraisal by Japanese Western art scholar Kiyoshi Ichikawa. The front of the lid reads "Byzantine Period, Fish and Arabesque Design Lined Bowl," and the back of the lid reads "Byzantine Period, 11th-12th Century, Kiyoshi Ichikawa." It comes housed in a carefully crafted, elegant wooden box. It is an excellent collector's item. With no major defects or damage, it is in excellent condition for excavated pottery. A highly recommended piece that combines historical context, decorative beauty, and state of preservation. Size: Diameter 25.6cm, Height 9cm Weight: Approximately 1kg Item Number: PO366
