About the Item

A rare, large and unique antique Venetian Murano art glass bowl or centerpeice hand blown from the finest rich royal blue murano glass and hand enamelled with 24k gold leaf. Scroll vines and leaves adorne this art glass bowl along with human heads in a classical baroque or renaissance style. Similar to early examples of venetian glass such as the Barovier wedding cup and other museum pieces. This exquisite venetian art glass bowl is marked on the bottom with a 6 prong pontil mark attesting to the significant age and quality of this piece. A true masterwork of murano glass art. Attributed to Salviati or Barovier workshops. Enamelled Venetian glass refers to high-quality glass from the Venetian lagoon, particularly from Murano, that was decorated with colourful enamels and gilding from the second half of the 15th century onwards. This popular Renaissance-era glass is known for its intricate designs, which often included mythological scenes, allegories, and grotesque motifs, and was created by a highly skilled cold-enamelling process that was then fused to the hot glass in a furnace. From the mid-15th to the 17th century, Venetian enamelled glass was highly prized across Europe by royalty and aristocrats, leading to Venetian-style glass being made in other countries.
