About the Item

Exceptional French Art Deco frosted molded glass fruit bowl / centerpiece designed by Pierre d’Avesn and produced by Daum at their Croismare glassworks, France, circa 1920s. This elegant centerpiece displays a refined molded decoration characteristic of Pierre d’Avesn’s work, combining sculptural clarity with balanced proportions. The softly frosted glass diffuses light beautifully, making it both a functional fruit bowl and a striking decorative object. The bowl bears the molded glass signature “Lorrain” on the rim (see photo), which corresponds specifically to Daum’s production in Croismare. It is important to note that pieces produced in Croismare were signed “Lorrain” and never “Daum”, a well-known distinction among collectors. Designer: Pierre d’Avesn Manufacturer: Daum (Croismare glassworks) Origin: France Period: 1920s Material: Frosted molded glass Style: Art Deco Measurements Diameter: 11 in (27.9 cm) Height: 3.9 in (10 cm) Condition Good to very good vintage condition Some mold hairlines on the underside (external), inherent to the glassmaking techniques of the period Light surface scratches from use on the interior base All consistent with age and authentic production Born Pierre Gire in 1901, Pierre d’Avesn is regarded as one of the most important French designers of molded glass in the Art Deco period, alongside René Lalique and Sabino. At just 14 years old, he began working for René Lalique, where he remained for nearly a decade. During this formative period, d’Avesn designed some of Lalique’s most iconic and highly collectible models, including the celebrated “Serpent” and “Tourbillons” vases. In 1926, he left Lalique to develop his own designs, which were initially produced by the Cristallerie de Saint-Rémy. In 1930, Daum Frères appointed him artistic director of their molded glass department at the Croismare glassworks, a position he held until the major strikes of 1936. He later became director of Verlys in 1937 and, from 1940 onward, worked independently, with production carried out by the Cristallerie de Choisy-le-Roi (Sèvres). Pierre d’Avesn’s work is increasingly sought after for its exceptional sculptural quality, technical mastery, and timeless Art Deco elegance. Daum Frères, founded in Nancy in the late 19th century, is one of the most prestigious names in French art glass. While best known for its Art Nouveau and Art Deco creations, Daum expanded its production in the early 20th century with a dedicated molded glass facility in Croismare, Lorraine. Pieces produced at Croismare were signed “Lorrain”, distinguishing them from Daum’s Nancy output. These works, often designed by leading artists such as Pierre d’Avesn, reflect a modern and sculptural approach to glassmaking and remain highly collectible today.
