About the Item

Stunning in size, color and subject matter, this large bowl --a magnificent example of Art Deco style -- is bathed in a rich, deep red glaze and features a pair of cavorting mermaids in tooled silver. The bowl was designed by Wilhelm Kåge in 1939 and executed by the famed Gustavsberg porcelain firm located on the west coast of Sweden. Kåge developed the Argenta line of Art Deco pieces in the late 1920s, and most are glazed in a brilliant turquoise color, embellished with mermaids, sea dragons and other aquatic creatures. Very rarely, Kåge executed bowls or vases in this deep, rich red glaze, and pieces of this size are rarer still. The bowl is well-marked and dated on the bottom.
