About the Item
This mid-20th century Chinese export Famille Rose punch bowl is a finely hand-painted example of porcelain artistry rooted in the decorative traditions of Qing dynasty aesthetics. Crafted circa 1950s, the bowl draws inspiration from the Yongzheng period but was produced for the export market, combining technical finesse with the opulent symbolism characteristic of Famille Rose wares.
The interior features a central springtime scene with four birds nestled among blooming peonies and leafy branches, painted in vibrant enamel tones of yellow, rose pink, cobalt blue, and green. These motifs are emblematic within Chinese decorative arts—peonies representing wealth and honour, while birds and blossoms evoke seasonal renewal. This painterly tableau is framed by an ornate border enriched with butterflies, apricot sprays, and tied scrolls—each carrying layered auspicious meanings.
The exterior is equally ornate, with a densely decorated floral ground in deep cobalt blue, enlivened by polychrome enamel blossoms rendered in the distinctive Fencai palette. The saturated enamels—turquoise, lavender, saffron, and jade—display well under natural light and underscore the bowl's decorative potential as a table centrepiece or interior accent.
Measuring 30.5 cm in diameter and 14 cm high, the bowl is in good condition with no chips or cracks. Minor enamel wear is visible to the central interior design, in line with its age and use. Please refer to the detailed images for close-up views.
