Lacquer, commonly used as a finishing material for forms made of wood, metal, ceramics, leather, glass, or clay, has a clear limitation when it comes to being used as a material in itself. This realization led me to explore ways in which lacquer could transcend its role as a surface treatment and instead become a structural medium. I sought to express the intrinsic, often invisible qualities of lacquer as a substance.
I am drawn to the survival-driven forms created by wounded lacquer trees in the harshness of nature, prompting reflection on life, space, and their interrelationships. Stretching, filling, and layering—through these simple, repetitive actions, the resulting varied lines generate countless spaces and multidimensional forms on a two-dimensional plane, gradually expanding the realm of life
