About the Item

Dutch Delft Blue and White Chinoiserie Punch Bowl A striking Dutch Delft pottery punch bowl dating from the height of the Delftware tradition, circa 1720. This high-sided bowl features a wide, flared foot and is decorated with the classic cobalt blue on a tin-glazed white ground. The exterior is richly decorated in the Chinoiserie style—a European interpretation of East Asian design—with a complex botanical and panel composition. Below the rim, a continuous band features six large circular medallions, each skillfully painted with a flowering plant. These alternate with six smaller panels, each displaying a flower head set within a dark blue reserve. Below this main register, the body is adorned with a stylized series of twelve smaller flowers set against the white ground. The design continues into the interior, which features a central motif of two flowers growing among three plants, surrounded by a border of alternating dots and circles higher on the side. Despite some minor chips to the underside of the foot, the bowl is in good condition, its brilliant blue decoration and monumental size making it a superb example of early 18th-century Delftware. Dimensions: 10 1/4 inches diameter x 5 3/4 inches height. Historical Context This punch bowl is a product of the flourishing Delftware industry in Delft, Netherlands, during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Delftware is a type of earthenware covered with a white opaque tin-glaze, which closely imitated the highly prized Chinese porcelain that was being imported by the Dutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie or VOC). The period around 1720 represents the peak of Delft potters' skill in incorporating Chinese decorative elements into their European forms. This bowl’s decoration, known as Chinoiserie, is a clear example of this cultural synthesis. European potters, unable to fully replicate the hard-paste porcelain of China, developed the tin-glazed technique to mimic the distinct blue-and-white color palette and intricate motifs. However, the designs are not direct copies; rather, they are fanciful, romanticized interpretations of Asian themes, filtered through a European aesthetic. Punch bowls were particularly popular and highly symbolic vessels in the 18th century. The act of mixing and serving punch was central to social gatherings, making a large, elaborately decorated bowl like this a significant status symbol and centerpiece for any affluent Dutch household. The combination of its functional form and fashionable Chinoiserie decoration places this piece firmly within the vibrant global trade and cultural exchange of the Dutch Golden Age.
