About the Item

Late 19th century French tazza, cast in heavy bronze with exquisite level of detail in every curve. In the center of the crater is a depiction of Venus, and her child Cupid, whose motherly love has been rendered in touching detail. The central figures appear against a smooth background ringed by a laurel wreath, with Greek script to the side of each figure, which may offer more insight once translated. Mounted on each side of the tazza are elaborately decorated handles featuring scrolls, heads of rams, and an ominous face. Neoclassical influences are carried through the base and legs, down to the clawed feet on pads resting on the table. No visible hallmarks, likely contemporary with Ferdinand Barbedienne (the foundry) and Ferdinand Levillain the sculptor.
