About the Item

Green Iridescent green tinted luster favrile art glass compote; made in Tiffany Studios and designed by world renowned glass designer Arthur J. Nash; etched on the underneath "NASH" and the number "843" (see image). It is in very good and all original condition and color with no chips. The color is fabulous, and changes readily and pleasantly with the light; this is a result of the famous iridescent and reflective nature of the glass which was developed in the 1890's by Arthur J. Nash who worked with Louis Comfort at Tiffany's, and eventually owned a portion of the company in the 1920's. The pinched scalloped design to the circular top tapers down to a ribbed body which funnels onto a 2 3/4" circular base. Some history on Arthur Nash----he and his brothers worked with Louis Comfort Tiffany from the 1890's through the 1920's, at which time, Nash acquired a substantial portion of the Tiffany company; becoming more assertive; to the point where some of the Tiffany pieces marked would bear his name. Eventually in the late 1920's he started his own company which ultimately failed, along with Tiffany's in 1932 as a result of the depression. Dimensions: 4 1/4" high x 3 7/8" diameter Provenance: Recently acquired from an upscale San Francisco estate Note: I am a second generation antiques dealer and have been in business for 50 years; I am also a member of several prestigious antique associations. Thus, I am well qualified to inspect and evaluate the products I offer for sale and I guarantee this to be authentic and as I have described.

Victorian Porcelain Spittoon, circa 1880 by Imari, Japan
Located in Incline Village, NV
The mark on the underneath (see image) indicates that this spittoon is of Japanese Imari porcelain, manufactured circa 1880, and made specifically for the American market for the preponderance of bars and saloons at that time. These were popular from 1865 to the turn of the century; this is a particularly fancy and elaborate example. Note the copious and highly detailed and beautiful floral decoration to the inside of the upper portion of the spittoon; pretty fancy for something meant for spit and saliva! Fantastic and all original condition with no cracks, no chips and very bright paint in sharp colors of blue rust and pink, and meticulously painted in a floral pattern. Several of these would have been “stationed” in strategic places within a saloon. This is a wonderful piece of porcelain, and quality item of saloon and Western United States history...
