Jaap Ravelli Large Sculptural Mid Century Studio Pottery Bowl. The Netherlands, mid 20th century.
This large pottery bowl by Jaap Ravelli is a very special piece. It has a very unusual shape with a great sculptural quality. In a way it is shaped like a basket with a gap in the middle of the handle, but it looks different and rich from every corner. The tactile material and colors of the piece are also very interesting.
Jacob Jozef (Jaap) Ravelli (1916-2011) is a well known Dutch ceramic artist from the 20th century. Together with his brother he started a pottery workshop in 1942 and from the fifties onwards his designs became very popular. The Ravelli pottery designs are very distinct and recognizable and were quite modern in those days. These days the Ravelli pottery pieces are great and modern looking mid-century pieces.
