About the Item

Boldly and energetically painted, this Art Deco bowl depicts two nude male figures -- Jacob and the angel -- wrestling during the night, as related in the book of Genesis. Jacob refused to submit, and was rewarded by the angel for his tenacity and faithfulness. Here the artist depicts the two figures in rich colors -- purple and gold -- on a sandy, speckled ground. The artist signed the piece with his/her monogram -- BR -- and indicated the date of the piece: 1927. We have not identified the artist, but the expression of the figures brings to mind Robert Lohman in Indianapolis, William Littlefield in Massachusetts and even Duncan Grant in Great Britain.

Unique and striking, this wall plate by the famed Lachenal ceramic works in France depicts two nude male figures harvesting lush, broad-leafed plants in the field. The ceramic works were founded by Edmond Lachenal, who was well known for his Art Nouveau ceramics...
