About the Item

Large Abstract Raku Glazed Studio Ceramic Bowl, Japanese-Style Mid-Century Design, Large Raku Fired Studio Pottery Bowl Attributed to Michel Brainin, Japanese-Style Glaze, Exceptional Large Mid-Century Raku Ceramic Bowl with Polychrome Glaze, Japan-Inspired, Large Mid-Century Raku Studio Pottery Bowl, Paul Soldner / Suzanne Ramié Style An exceptional large mid-century Raku glazed studio ceramic bowl featuring a bold, abstract Japan-inspired design and richly layered polychrome crackle glazes. This striking decorative bowl is attributed to Michel Brainin of Honfleur, France, known for his expressive, painterly ceramic surfaces and experimental firing techniques. Executed in the Raku firing tradition, the bowl displays a dramatic interplay of indigo blues, smoky blacks, ochres, and terracotta tones, creating a sweeping abstract composition across the wide, gently concave form. The surface reveals areas of intentional crackle, smoked patterns, and splash-glaze effects reminiscent of Paul Soldner’s American Raku work and the Suzanne Ramié / Madoura Vallauris ceramic style. This impressive sculptural piece measures 21 1/4" in diameter and 2 3/8" high, weighing approximately 23 pounds—a substantial presence ideal for a tabletop centerpiece, large kitchen island, console, or gallery display. Entirely hand-crafted, the bowl captures the expressive spontaneity and organic beauty that define the finest mid-century studio pottery. About Raku Technique Derived from a process first developed in late 16th-century Japan by the potter Chijiro, Raku firing involves removing red-hot ceramics from the kiln and allowing them to cool in open air or reduction chambers. The method creates unpredictable colors, metallic flashes, crackle glazes, and smoke tracings—qualities highly prized by Japanese tea ceremony masters. The tradition continues today under the Raku family, now in its 15th generation. Condition Very good vintage condition with natural firing effects and surface variations typical of Raku ceramics. A Perfect Piece For • Mid-Century Modern interiors • Japanese-inspired or wabi-sabi settings • Studio pottery collectors • Contemporary art-driven homes • Large-scale sculptural ceramic displays A rare and visually powerful mid-century Raku art bowl that will elevate any interior with its dramatic scale and masterful glazing.
