Andries Dirk Copier (1901-1991) is a unique figure in the history of Dutch glass, dedicating most of his life to the Leerdam factory, becoming its most renowned designer during a period of prosperity and maintaining a unique position for 70 years.
Andries Dirk Copier is considered the most important Dutch glass artist of the 20th century. Copier's work was influenced by the latest technical discoveries, giving rise to contemporary and personal creations.
Early in his career, he was appointed designer at Leerdam Glasfabriek (Leerdam Glassworks), where he had the opportunity to experiment. With his team, he discovered a wide range of techniques for creating utilitarian and unique "Unica" pieces, such as the use of tin crackle effects, enamel powders, and freely formed bubbles and veins.
His utilitarian glass creations, such as the "gildeglas," are still in production. His Unicas earned him international renown. Introduced in 1925 under the name "Leerdam Unica," these experimental glass objects are considered the forerunners of the Studio Glass Movement and presented glass as a fully-fledged art form.
