About the Item

A large Imari porcelain display bowl from the early 20th century. The bowl features a gently scalloped rim and is decorated with exquisitely painted enamels in blue, orange, red, and green in a brocade pattern, accented with gilded details. Imari porcelains originated in Japan in the late 17th century, quickly reaching popularity abroad by the 18th century. Imari ware can be identified through a vibrant palette of cobalt blue, iron red, and deep orange, often accented with gilding. Here, a vibrant green is included in the design, a brocade-like pattern which mimics Japanese textiles. Dimensions: 14 in. Dm x 5 in. H Condition: Very good. Slight wear to gilding and enamels throughout. Exhibitions: Ben Pentreath, New York Kips Bay Decorator Showhouse 2025

Thomas Minton is credited with creating the standard pattern as we know it today circa 1780; from there, all the major English potteries, and some American ones, began producing ‘Blue Willow’ transferwares...
