About the Item

Here's a very attractive--and substantial--mid century blown glass bowl designed by Andries Dirk (A.D.) Copier, considered the most important Dutch glass artist of the 20th century, and manufactured by Glasfabriek Leerdam. The bowl measures 12.5" in diameter, 3" high and weighs nearly 10 pounds. This example is a beautiful smokey grayish-blue that sometimes reads slightly green in certain light. The bowl is in very good condition--the only wear is on the bowl's foot--as you'll see in the photos. There are no chips, cracks or noticeable scratches on the body of the bowl. This piece presents beautifully and could be used for fruit or displaying decorative filler--or it could stand alone as the beautiful 20th century object that it is. About Andries Dirk Copier: Andries Dirk (A.D.) Copier (1901-1991) is considered the most important Dutch glass artist of the 20th century. Copier’s work was influenced by the most recent technical discoveries, resulting in personal contemporary designs. Early in his career he was appointed as designer at the Leerdam Glasfabriek (Leerdam Glassworks), where he was given the opportunity to experiment. Together with his team he discovered a wide range of techniques for both utility and one-off ‘Unica’ pieces, such as the use of tin crackle effects, enamel powders, and free formed bubbles and ribs. His designs for utility glass, such as the ‘gildeglas’, are still in production. His Unicas brought him international fame. Introduced in 1925 as ‘Leerdam Unica’, these experimental glass objects are regarded as the predecessors of the Studio Glass Movement and show glass as an art object in its own right.

1930s Napier Silver-Plate Cocktail Shaker Designed by Emil Schuelke
By Emil Schuelke
Located in Minneapolis, MN
Here is a hard-to-find modernist silver-plate cocktail shaker designer by Emil Schuelke in the mid-1930s and made by Napier Company of Meriden, Connecticut. The cone-shaped shaker consists of two pieces--the top can be used for measuring ingredients. This example is in good condition--there are no deep scratches or dents. There some silver losses on the body and top of the shaker and the inside strainer has loss as well. You can tell the shaker has been used--there is wear to the interior. We've included several photos which represent the condition well. But all in all, this shaker presents nicely and would make a great addition to any bar or cocktail shaker collection. From Wikipedia: "Napier silver designs from the first half of the 20th century are in museum collections including the Brooklyn Museum, Newark Museum and a substantial collection at the Dallas Museum of Art. Over the years, Napier silver has been featured in museum exhibitions, including Modernism in American Silver: 20th Century Design at the Smithsonian in Washington, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Wolfsonian in Miami Beach, the Nevada Museum of Art in Reno, and the Dixon Gallery and Gardens in Memphis, TN (2005–07). Napier designs have also been included in two shows at the Brooklyn Museum, entitled 19th century Modern (2011–12; 2013–15). In November 2016-November 2017, the iconic Napier penguin cocktail shaker...
