About the Item

Created by one of America's most important sculptors working in the Art Deco period, this large and heavy sculptural bowl by Waylande Gregory depicts a mermaid holding a fish in either hand, surrounded by the brilliant blues and greens of the sea. Gregory considered this an important work, and he gave it in appreciation to Dr. Langrock, his personal physician. Prodigious and indefatigable, Gregory produced a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic beginning in his college days, through his years working with Lorado Taft and later when he created large multi-figure pieces for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. This piece, which is heavy and substantial, displays one of his innovations -- creating pools of crystalline, glassy glaze in the depths of a piece, giving the impression that you are looking into the inner regions of a pool or stream.

"Triton, Merman and Mermaid, " Sculptural Vase w/ Aquatic Motif and Nudes in Blue
By Edgardo Simone
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A masterful -- and brilliantly-hued -- example of high style Art Deco sculpture, this large and unique vase depicts several nude figures along its upper edge -- a Triton blowing his shell-horn on one side and a nude merman and mermaid embracing on the other. The sides of the vase are enlivened by a series of jumping dolphins, and the entire surface is glazed in streaky blues, pale greens and rich browns. The artist was Edgardo Simone, an eccentric and brilliant sculptor who worked in bronze, plaster and ceramics over several decades. He was born in Italy and trained in Rome, but spent much of his career in America, specializing in portrait busts. He sculpted the likenesses of Thomas Edison, John Pershing, Henry Ford, Louis Brandeis, Sally Rand, President Franklin Roosevelt...
