About the Item
Mid-century decorative ceramic bowl (circa 1960s) by Albert Thiry. Chalky-white glazed interior sides prepare the viewer for the delightful base which consists of a circle of subtle sage green encircled by incised leaf motif with a sunflower effect. The exterior of the piece reuses the charming green in a decor reminiscent of foliage yet is covered by an incised cross-hatched reed pattern which encircles its entirety. The bowl is not only visually stunning but very tactile as well. In overall good vintage condition with some visible but minor loss of enamel on the underside of the bowl's lip (Please see the attached photos). This in no way detracts from the overall charming visual impression of the bowl. Signed: 'Thiry' on base underside of dish. This gallery finds that Thiry's works are more and more in demand in overdue recognition of his artistic creativity. Upon request a video of this piece will be provided.
About the Artist: Albert Thiry (1932-2009) was born in Nice, France. His family moved close by to Vallauris where he spent most of the school holidays in the potteries; in 1956 he was taken on as an assistant decorator with an opportunity to make his own pieces. Albert and his wife, Pyot, set up their own pottery in 1961. Their standard production, in Vallauris clay with added grog to emphasise rusticity, resulted in delightful pieces both highly elaborate and utilitarian.
