About the Item

This handblown Murano glass bowl was created by Alfredo Barbini in Italy during the mid-1950s, a pivotal period in the development of post-war Murano art glass. The bowl is formed in a softly irregular circular shape with three gentle indentations along the rim, subtly recalling the contours of a clamshell. The freeform profile reflects Barbini’s sculptural sensibility and his exceptional command of hot glass techniques. Executed in opaque pale blue glass, the surface is delicately enriched with suspended gold polveri, lending a quiet luminosity and refined decorative depth. Within the glass, a carefully controlled bullicante pattern—an ordered matrix of fine air bubbles—adds visual rhythm and technical sophistication, characteristic of high-quality Murano studio production of the period. The bowl measures approximately 6 inches (15.2 cm) across, 5 inches (12.7 cm) deep, and 2 inches (5.1 cm) high. Though compact in scale, it is visually engaging and versatile, suitable for use as a vide-poche, vanity dish, or as a standalone decorative object. Very good vintage condition. No chips or cracks. Light wear to the base consistent with age and display. A refined example of mid-century Italian glass, combining restrained elegance with the material experimentation that defines Alfredo Barbini’s best Murano work.
