About the Item
A large Murano glass centrepiece bowl, attributed to Alfredo Barbini and produced in the 1960s for the American export market—a period marked by the global rise of Venetian glass design, where bold forms and technical innovation defined the Murano tradition.
This sculptural freeform Murano bowl is crafted in luminous green glass, with a distinctive internal decoration: a central ring of cased white lattimo glass swathes, delicately layered in a radial composition that evokes feathers or stylised petals. The interplay between the transparent green and opaque white creates a striking contrast, highlighting the refined execution of the sommerso technique, a hallmark of Barbini’s work.
Shaped as a fluid oval with an asymmetric, shell-like curl at the rim, the piece reflects the expressive tendencies of mid-century Murano glassmaking, where form followed both instinct and craftsmanship.
The bowl measures 27.5 cm wide, 23 cm deep, and 7 cm high. It remains in excellent vintage condition, with no chips or cracks. Minor firing inclusions are visible on close inspection—typical of handblown Murano glass from the period, and not considered flaws.
A refined and collectible example of 20th-century Italian art glass, this centrepiece bowl presents beautifully as a sculptural object in both modern and eclectic interiors.
