About the Item
An elegant and increasingly scarce Murano glass centrepiece bowl by Fratelli Toso, hand-blown in Murano, Italy, in the early 1950s. Conceived as a sculptural focal object rather than a utilitarian vessel, the bowl exemplifies the organic experimentation and refined craftsmanship that defined post-war Italian art glass.
The bowl is executed using the sommerso technique, with a luminous core of milky opaline glass encased within a thick layer of clear crystal. Suspended within the glass are delicately twisted rose-pink zanfirico canes, arranged in rhythmic, spiralling patterns that animate both the interior and surface. Subtle aventurine inclusions, created by copper particles within the glass, introduce a gentle shimmer—an effect characteristic of Murano’s technical sophistication during this period.
Its undulating, asymmetrical freeform silhouette reflects the expressive language of mid-century Venetian design, while the precision of the cane work speaks to the high level of skill associated with Fratelli Toso. Among Murano furnaces, Fratelli Toso was particularly admired in the 1950s for its innovative use of colour, cane techniques, and modernist form, producing works that balanced technical mastery with artistic freedom.
The bowl measures approximately 8 in (20.3 cm) wide, 7 in (17.8 cm) deep, and 3 in (7.6 cm) high.
Condition is very good vintage. There are no chips or cracks. Light surface wear to the base is consistent with age and careful use.
A refined collector’s object, ideally suited as a Murano glass centrepiece for a dining table, console, or coffee table, functioning equally as a sculptural statement and decorative accent within both period interiors and contemporary settings.
