About the Item
Hallmarked in London in 1700 by Francis Garthorne, this impressive William III period sterling silver monteith bowl features a shaped and scalloped rim with chased detailing, flat-chased decoration to the upper body, applied lion mask handles with drop ring fittings, and is raised on a circular collet foot with gadroon border. The bowl is engraved with a period armorial to one side.
The monteith bowl first appeared in England in the late 17th century. The name is believed to derive from a Scotsman named Monteith (or Monteigh), known for wearing a cloak with a scalloped hem, which resembled the bowl’s decorative rim. Originally designed for chilling wine glasses, the scalloped edge allowed for suspending stemmed glasses by their feet into ice water below. Monteiths later evolved for use as punch bowls or for decorative display. The bowl measures 7"(18cm) tall and 12"(31cm) in diameter, and weighs 54.8 troy ounces.
