About the Item
A stunning large studio pottery bowl of shallow form titled Paradise Fish and decorated with three fish by renowned potter Reginald A. Lewis (British, 1899-1990) and probably dating from around the Mid-20th Century, if not earlier.
Reginald Lewis taught at Birmingham Municipal School of Art between 1934 and 1951 and worked in multiple mediums including ceramic, stone, coal, wood and paint. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1948 becoming a fellow in 1975 and later vice president. He was also a founder member of Birmingham Craftsmen’s Club, which was influenced by the philosophy of William Morris. He was also head of the School of Ceramics and Glass at Birmingham College of Art and from 1948 opened his own studio, the Glympton Studio at Water Orton, near Birmingham.
This large bowl stands on a narrow round foot and is of simple shallow round form with the inner bowl hand-painted with three exotic fish swimming amidst reeds. The fish are painted in tones of blue, green, white and brown against an olive green ground below a hand applied linear decorative border. The bowl is signed along with an impressed pottery mark and is also titled Paradise Fish.
