A charming ceramic bowl by Robert Picault, crafted in Vallauris during the 1950s. Measuring 25 cm in diameter, the piece exemplifies Picault’s signature style, combining a modernist sensibility with Mediterranean decorative traditions. The bowl is hand-glazed in his characteristic palette of green, turquoise, and blue, with a stylized floral motif painted at the center and repeated rhythmically around the exterior walls.
The interplay of geometric order and expressive brushwork reflects the postwar Vallauris spirit, where utilitarian pottery was elevated into decorative art. Picault, who worked alongside Picasso, became known for transforming simple forms into bold, graphic statements through his use of color and line.
Functional yet striking, this bowl can serve equally as a table centerpiece or a display piece in a collection of mid-century ceramics. A fine example of the artistry that made Vallauris a hub of French Riviera creativity in the 1950s.

Robert Picault
Robert Picault was born in Paris. After studying ceramics at the Ecole des Arts Appliqués in Paris, he moved to Vallauris at the end of World War Two. Here, with Roger Capron, he founded the Atelier Callis in 1946. Two years later, he set up his own pottery in the Chemin du Fournas in the village. He was a friend, colleague and next-door-neighbour to Pablo Picasso, and the two learnt from each other aspects of the other's specialities. Picault was also an accomplished cinematographer and photographer, and made a series of four short films with Picasso and leading show-business personalities of the 1950s. He used copper oxide and iron oxide in his glazes, and the bulk of his work is characterized by green and brown geometric motifs consisting of noughts and crosses, bands and waves.
