About the Item

The plate is characterized by its pure, balanced form, allowing the etched pattern to stand out with clarity and depth. The decoration technique, directly inspired by Art Deco glassmaking methods, gives the surface a subtle contrast between matte and glossy areas. The piece is engraved “R. About Roger Méquinion
Roger Méquinion was a French artist and engraver who graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before joining Lalique, where he worked as chief engraver during the company’s most prestigious period under René Lalique. During his time at Lalique, he contributed to major decorative commissions, including the interiors of the legendary SS Normandie ocean liner and the Orient Express. There, he developed exceptional expertise in decorative techniques, particularly sandblasting, which would later define his ceramic work.
In 1939, with the outbreak of World War II, Lalique suspended production. Méquinion relocated to Aubagne near Marseille, a major ceramics center located in the French free zone. Over the following ten years, he created a highly personal and artistically ambitious body of ceramic work.
Méquinion produced vases, plates, and dishes in a wide range of rich colors and bold geometric or stylized patterns. His approach combined pure, modern forms with strong decorative motifs. The pieces were first fired with a glossy enamel, then decorated using stencils and precision sand-etching, directly echoing the techniques he had mastered in glass engraving at Lalique.
Today, Roger Méquinion ceramics are prized for their luxury quality, distinctive Art Deco aesthetic, and technical sophistication. They are considered rare, as production lasted only about ten years, making surviving examples highly sought after by collectors of French Art Deco and mid-century decorative arts.
