About the Item

A set of 7 miniature blue and orange lustre bowl designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones for Wedgwood ca. 1920 and decorated with the 'Hummingbirds' pattern. Daisy Makeig-Jones’s lustreware provided respite from the horrors of World War I and brought new life to a tired Wedgwood Factory. Makeig-Jones’s designs reached the height of popularity during the 1920s; her designs fit well within the intrepid and lively spirit of that decade. Decorated with vibrant hummingbirds in flight, this set of blue lustreware bowls is a gorgeous example of Daisy Makeig-Jones’s unique artistry. The Flying Humming Birds pattern, seen here slightly adapted to accommodate the bowls’ tiny size, debuted with the popular color combination of deep blue and orange in 1920 and quickly became a bestseller. Dimensions: 2 1/4 in. Dm x 3/4 in. H Condition: Excellent. References: Una des Fontaines, Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre: the Work of Daisy-Makeig Jones (New York: Born-Hawes, 1975).

Thomas Minton is credited with creating the standard pattern as we know it today circa 1780; from there, all the major English potteries, and some American ones, began producing ‘Blue Willow’ transferwares...
