Italian glass 'Scavo' bowl by Alfredo Barbini, Murano (circa 1970s). Scavo glass indicates that the glass went through a specific glass finishing technique. A special corrosive chemical is used on the surface of the glass piece to dissolve part of the finish to give it an etched or corroded look. This glass usually has an iron oxide finish. Signed on the base 'Barbino Murano' Murano Glass Lava black glass bowl / compote. Unusual technique. Classic form. Polished top.

Alfredo Barbini (1912–2007), a glass artist born in 1912 on the islands of Murano in the lagoon of Venice, Italy, was one of Murano's leading figures of the 20th century. His parents were members of families, which had been prominent in the glassmaking industry on Murano for generations as glassblowers and beadmakers.
