About the Item
A sumptuous Tibetan rock crystal bowl and cover mounted in gilt silver filigree and studded with coral, turquoise, and lapis lazuli.
The extravagant bowl has been carved out of a single piece of rock crystal. The rock crystal bowl is mounted upon a tall pedestal foot and surmounted by a fitted cover.
The mounts are crafted of gilt Tibetan silver with finely worked filigree and studded with coral, turquoise. (Tibetan silver is generally a lesser grade silver, with a purity lower than sterling.) The cover also with repoussee work featuring the Astamangala, or Eight Auspicious Symbols, comprised of the parasol, double fish, dhramachakra, treasure vase, victory banner, lotus flower, endless knot, and conch shell. A rock crystal finial surrounded by lapis lazuli tops the cover, serving as a handle.
The Astamangal motif is present on the bowl itself as well, with large emblems of the conch and dharmachakra applied to the sides along with stylize floral emblems.
