About the Item

Striking Organic Modern bowl was hand blown with fluid, folded edge. The colored yellow and brown glass inclusions were placed in abstract, graphic pattern on peachy beige background, with the whole structure enclosed in clear glass in sommerso technique. Minimal color palette balances complex shape of the piece, and the subtle flow of the pattern guides the eye along the folded glass surfaces. The bowl is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the bottom. Thomas Kelly is an established glass artist working in Vitrix Hot Glass studio in Corning, New York. He started in the glass studios of Alex Brand and Thomas Buechner where he had the opportunity to learn from two distinctly different artists, each having their own unique talents; Kelly worked for 10 years with Thomas Buechner III at Vitrix Hot Glass Studio, developing his glass working skills and aesthetic sensitivity. At Vitrix, visiting artists such as Lino Tagliapietra and Fritz Dreisbach educated and influenced him. When Buechner made the decision to leave glass to grow in another direction, Kelly was ready to take over ownership of Vitrix. Founded in 1979 by brothers Matthew and Thomas Buechner III in Corning's Market Street District, Vitrix Hot Glass Studio is regarded among America's prominent contemporary glass studios. Kelly’s work has been published and exhibited internationally and can be found in fine stores and galleries across the United States and in Canada, Europe, and Japan. Museum collections include the Corning Museum of Glass, Victoria and Albert Museum, Museum fur Kunst and Gewerbe, High Museum of Art, and others. We are offering similarly shaped Vitrix bowls in different palettes in separate listings.

Matthew Buechner for Thames Glass Centerpiece Bowl, American Studio Glass
Located in Clifton Springs, NY
Vintage large art glass bowl features an elongated oval form with wide inverted rim. The body of the bowl is done in cobalt blue glass; the colored glass is encased in clear glass layer in sommerso technique, forming symmetrical build-in twin handles on the sides of the bowl. The rounded, flowing form of the bowl shows Organic Modern style influence on Art Deco inspired design; the minimal shape of the piece is accentuated by the striking, jewel-like color palette. The bowl is signed by the artist on the bottom; it measures xx" wide (including handles), making it an excellent choice for the centerpiece or a statement decor object. Sculptural, highly decorative bowl with graphic form, high quality craftsmanship, and statement piece presence will make a great gift to a collector or a design enthusiast and a perfect addition to a wide range of interiors, from Traditional to Post Modern, Art Deco, Mid Century Modern, Eclectic, Transitional, Scandinavian Modern, Minimalist, Japandi, Collected, or Contemporary. Matthew Buechner is an established American glass artist; he started his training in 1975 as an apprentice to glassblower Jon Meyer in Canton, New York, and continued it at Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, where he studied glass blowing with Michael Pavlik. Matthew also served as an apprentice at the Glashutte Eisch in Germany, and attended workshops at Rhode Island School of Design, the Penland School of Design, and the Haystack Mountain School in Maine. In 1979, together with his brother Thomas Buechner III, Matthew founded Vitrix Hot Glass Studio in Corning's Market Street District, regarded among America's prominent contemporary glass studios. In 1981 Matthew founded his own studio, Thames Glass...
