About the Item

This Wedgwood blue Jasperware “Sacrifice” bowl is a fine example of the firm’s iconic Neoclassical design tradition. Crafted in England from unglazed, fine-grained Jasperware stoneware, the bowl features a deep matte blue body with crisp white bas-relief decoration—the classic colorway most closely associated with Wedgwood. Measuring approximately 3.75 inches high by 8 inches in diameter, the round form is both elegant and substantial. Surrounding the exterior is the celebrated “Sacrifice” frieze, depicting draped Greco-Roman figures performing a ritual offering—often interpreted as the Sacrifice to Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture and the harvest. Set within a landscape of stylized trees and an altar, the figures are rendered in exquisite detail, their crisp white relief evoking the refined beauty of carved cameo or hardstone. Developed by Josiah Wedgwood in 1774, Jasperware captured the spirit of the Neoclassical movement, reflecting the era’s fascination with ancient art and mythology. This “Sacrifice” bowl exemplifies that vision, combining sculptural precision with timeless grace—an enduring piece of English craftsmanship and an essential form for the Jasperware collector.
