About the Item

This English porcelain bowl is from Wedgwood's eminently collectible Fairyland Lustre range designed by artist Daisy Makeig-Jones. Fairyland Lustre, introduced in 1915, was a radical departure from Wedgwood's traditional 18th and 19th century designs. Pieces were highly ornamental with fantastical subject matter and vibrant coloration which included 24-karat gold trim. Production was costly and due to changing tastes and the onset of the Great Depression, the line was discontinued in 1929. The pattern of this large bowl is known as Celestial Dragons and the exterior of the piece features two large four-clawed dragons which alternate with flames, all of which are executed in gold. The dragons and flames are set on a mottled blue ground finished in an iridescent lustre glaze. The rim and foot are finished with a gilt Greek key border. The interior of the piece has an opalescent greenish blue ground with five small dragons executed in gilt. The small dragons encircle a large three-clawed dragon which is located at the center. The interior rim is finished in the same mottled blue ground found on the exterior of the bowl, and is decorated with a gilt border which includes five cartouches with exotic temple scenes. The bowl is in excellent antique condition with no chips, cracks or restoration and has a clear ring when tapped. The gilt decoration is sharp with some slight age-related wear along with minor scratching to the interior base, neither of which detract from the appearance of the piece and are noted for accuracy. The foot rim also has three felt pads applied by a former owner to protect the surface on which the bowl is displayed. The bowl measures 10.5" in diameter at the mouth and stands 4.375" tall. The foot bears the gilt Wedgwood Portland Vase mark along with the words "Wedgwood" and "England". The hand lettered pattern number "Z4829" is also present. This large bowl displays beautifully and would be a wonderful addition to a collection of Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre, or works equally well as a Stand alone decorative accent. Truly a lovely piece.
