Beautiful Rare 17th Century Japanese Arita Porcelain Kendi This exquisite blue and white kendi (ewer or jug) was crafted in the Arita kilns of Japan during the late 17th century, circa 1670–1690. Originally intended for export via the Dutch East India Company (VOC), this piece exemplifies the refined aesthetics and technical mastery of early Arita porcelain production. Decorated with stylized floral panels and geometric patterns, the design draws from both Japanese sensibilities and the Chinese Transitional style, blending elegance with symmetry. The shape—a kendi with bulbous body, flaring neck, and side spout—was influenced by Southeast Asian and Islamic vessel forms, making it a true cross-cultural object.
