About the Item

The Daucer or pattipan of lobed shape on a lobed footring. On the base some spur-marks. Decorated in underglaze blue with a European landscape with trees, houses and two men and a horseman. Round the rim a dark blue border. The reverse is plain, on the base a six-character Chenghua mark. This saucer or pattipan (a stand for a teapot or milk jug, or used as spoon tray) belongs to another category within the 'Frijtom' group. Dutch artist Frederik Van Frytom (1632 – 1702). Decorated in Delft style with a landscape. The shape and decoration imitate a Delftware model in the Prinsenhof Museum, Delft, painted in the Frijtom style and dated to 1684 (fig. 314a), as part of a set of five different saucers The motif of the horseman is also seen on other export ware. Note the difference between the hats: the Delftware piece shows the men with common felt hats while the Japanese copy has them with three-cornered hats. It is unknown if this indicates another model or is simply an interpretation by the Japanese painter.
