About the Item
This hand-painted Soviet propaganda (agitprop) porcelain plate was produced in the early decades following the Russian Revolution. It bears a revolutionary slogan in Russian that translates to:
“To all who are brave and young at heart — take the sickle and the hammer.”
The central design features books, tools, and implements of labor, symbolizing education, productive work, and collective effort — core values promoted by the early Soviet state. During the 1920s, everyday porcelain objects were deliberately used as vehicles for political and ideological messaging, a practice known as agitprop.
The decoration is executed entirely by hand, visible in the expressive brushwork, subtle variations in the lettering, and the painterly treatment of the imagery. The reverse is marked with the hammer and sickle, the revolutionary emblem adopted for early Soviet state porcelain. While precise factory attribution is not possible, the plate is consistent with production at a state-run porcelain factory, most likely in Petrograd (later Leningrad), during the 1920s to early 1930s.
The plate remains structurally sound. There is minor glaze irregularity along the rim, consistent with age and original manufacture. No chips, cracks, or restorations are observed.
Date: Circa 1920s–early 1930s
Origin: Soviet Union
Material: Porcelain
Technique: Hand-painted
Condition: Excellent overall; minor glaze irregularity to the rim, no damage.
Soviet agitprop porcelain from this period is increasingly recognized as an important form of early twentieth-century political art, combining craftsmanship with revolutionary ideology and modern design. Produced in limited numbers during a brief and experimental era, these objects were not intended as luxury goods, which contributes to their present-day rarity. Collectors particularly value examples with hand-painted decoration, intact slogans, and original Soviet symbolism such as the hammer and sickle. Plates of this type offer a historically significant and highly collectible entry point into the field of Soviet decorative arts.
The visual motif is based on a design by the Estonian-born artist Rudolf Vilde, whose graphic compositions were used as models for several early Soviet agitprop porcelain designs. While the present plate follows Vilde’s original imagery, it cannot be stated with certainty whether this example was painted directly under his supervision or represents a later factory interpretation of his design.

Large Platter by Birger Kaipiainen for Rörstrand in Limited Edition 294/500
By Birger Kaipiainen, Rörstrand
Located in Stockholm, SE
Exceptional and beautiful large platter designed by Birger Kaipiainen for Rörstrand in limited edition, number 294/500. Decor with apples, plums and bunches of grapes. Birger Kaipiainen has been called "the master of ceramics" and "the undisputed ruler of decorative art".
Highlights of iridescent glaze. The platter is in mint condition. No sign of use.
Birger Kaipiainen began his career at the Arabia Art Department in 1937 and quickly found his own way to make art. The soon-to-begin Winter War and several losses in his personal life cast a dark shadow over the beginning of his artistic career, and this manifested as sadness and longing in his early works. They are dominated by ethereal, fairy-tale-like characters depicted in pastel tones, with references to early Italian Renaissance and longing for a more beautiful world.
Kaipiainen graduated from the School of Arts & Crafts (later known as the Aalto School of Arts of Helsinki). After graduation he went to work for Finnish ceramics...
