About the Item
Large-scale patinated bronze vide-poche with sterling silver starfish accent at the handle created by Graziella Laffi of Peru. Tray measures 23.5" by 9" by 2" and is signed on reverse, Peru, G. Laffi. In excellent vintage condition.
Laffi was born in Florence, Italy and studied drawing, painting, and architecture before turning her attention to silversmithing. In 1947 she immigrated with her parents to Peru where Graziella's father, Gino, also a metalsmith, opened a small workshop named Casa Laffi. It was at his workshop that she developed her remarkable skills as a silversmith, which are quite apparent in this exquisite piece. Laffi has been referred to as the "Spratling of Peru". There is an installation of her work on view at the LACMA in the Latin American galleries, Art of the Americas Building.
