About the Item

This lidded stoneware vessel was created by K.K. Sadowski, the husband-and-wife team Krystyna (Krystyn) and Konrad Sadowski, Polish-born artists who became important figures in the Canadian studio pottery movement in Nova Scotia during the 1940s and 1950s. The vessel is wheel-thrown in speckled stoneware with a soft, earthy glaze and a darker banded rim. The fitted lid sits neatly within the opening and is topped with a sculptural pierced handle, adding an organic, hand-formed detail. Subtle throwing lines remain visible throughout, emphasizing the handmade nature of the piece. While the Sadowskis are widely known for their vividly hand-painted wares featuring animals and nature motifs, this example represents a more restrained and modernist approach, focusing on form, texture, and material. The underside is incised “K.K. Sadowski,” consistent with studio work from their Nova Scotia period. A strong example of mid-century Canadian studio pottery, blending European modernist influence with the emerging North American craft movement. ⸻ Details • Maker: K.K.
