About the Item
Shaped and painted in gorgeous blue and gray glazes by Edouard Cazaux, master sculptor and ceramicist who exemplified the French Art Deco style at its finest, this ceramic dish or bowl features a nude male figure in combat with a large serpent. Cazaux studied at the Beaux Arts School in Sèvres as a young man, and participated in the famous Exposition Internationale des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes (which later gave the Art Deco style its name) in 1925, as part of the "Evolution of Style" exhibition in the Arthur Goldscheider pavilion. This piece is marked with Cazaux's monogram on the bottom.

View All"Triton with Dolphin", Art Deco Low Bowl in Blue with Aquatic Creatures, France
By Roger Mequinion
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Bold and striking, this unique low bowl or plate depicts a form of Triton that is part man, part horse and part fish -- known as an ichthyocentaur -- who is cavorting in the sea with a dolphin and starfish, with rows of waves below and around him. The artist was Roger Mequinion, who produced an entirely unique series of ceramic pieces with thick layers of glaze that he sandblasted to create a layered, three-dimensional design. Here, the outer glaze is a deep blue color, but the sandblasting reveals layers of light blue and white underneath. Mequinion was the first sculptor to work for René Lalique, and helped the master develop a sandblasting technique for his early glass...

"Harvest Scene with Male Nudes" by Cochet for Lachenal Ceramic Works, 1920s
By Raoul Lachenal
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Unique and striking, this wall plate by the famed Lachenal ceramic works in France depicts two nude male figures harvesting lush, broad-leafed plants in the field. The artist was clearly a painter and signed the piece "Cochet," suggesting that the artist may have been Gerard-Paul Cochet, who often painted harvest and rural scenes during his career. The ceramic works were founded by Edmond Lachenal, who was well known for his Art Nouveau ceramics...
