About the Item

Rare ceramic dish with incised decoration depicting swallows and dandelions. Denmark, circa 1887. Diameter: 27.2 cm. A beautifully modeled and hand-incised earthenware dish by the Danish painter and sculptor Niels Skovgaard, son of P.C. Skovgaard and brother to Joakim Skovgaard — both central figures in the Danish Golden Age and early modern period. This work reflects Niels Skovgaard’s deep fascination with nature and Nordic mythology, rendered here through delicately incised swallows and dandelions, symbols of renewal and lightness. The restrained earth tones and organic rhythm of the composition show his close connection to the Arts and Crafts movement and to the early wave of Danish National Romanticism. Pieces of Skovgaard’s ceramic work from this early period are exceedingly rare, often produced in small experimental batches that bridged art, craftsmanship, and symbolism. A unique and historically significant object at the intersection of Danish art and design history.
