Pair of small hand-painted ceramic tabletop plates, production ND DIOLFI of Montelupo. The objects proposed here were made in the second half of the 1990s, represent one of the most famous decorations of Montelupo ceramics, that of the "Harlequins." Environment: Located in the heart of Tuscany, near Florence, Montelupo has a history inextricably linked to the artistic working of ceramics, and has been recognized for centuries as a major production center in the Florentine area. History: In the 1300s the first productions began and in a short time, as new kilns sprang up, artistic production gained great fame, first Italy then the Mediterranean and the New World. Tradition: The "Harlequins" decoration (which is depicted in the objects offered here) went on to identify Montelupo production for much of the 1600s. It was characterized by depictions, on a yellow background, of characters and figures of the time painted in an ironic, almost caricatured manner, identifying with popular culture. Present day: In the Montelupo Museum of Ceramics, more than 3,000 pieces dating from the late 13th century through the 18th century are collected on three floors, it can be said that the history of the area is preserved. The tradition of Ceramics, however, is alive and continuing today. Walk "The Road of Ceramics" will introduce manufacturers who have been able to interpret and integrate tradition with innovation at a high level.
