About the Item
A Very Fine Pair of George II Salvers Made in London in 1729 by John Tuite
The Salvers stand on four cast pilaster supports in each corner. The main body has a square form with incurved corners and a raised rim decorated with reeding. The centre of each piece is engraved with a contemporary Armorial, surrounded by a Baroque shell and scroll cartouche. The Arms are those of Lonsdale. Each is very well marked on the reverse, in addition to being engraved with their original scratch weight. Both are in excellent condition and have a good colour. John Tuite was a specialist Salver maker of fine quality. He was born in Dublin and apprenticed to John Matthews in 1703. He moved to London in 1723 and had workshops in Lichfield Street when these Salvers were made.
