About the Item

This pair of early 19th-century Wedgwood caneware saucers shows the elegant restraint that defines the firm’s neoclassical production of the Regency period. Made in the characteristic warm caneware stoneware body, each saucer features a finely molded border of scrolling vines, grape clusters, and classical foliage. The low-relief ornament encircles the rim with quiet precision, catching light along the raised details. The undecorated central well enhances the clarity of the molded border, creating the balanced, disciplined look that made Wedgwood’s early stonewares so admired. Caneware of this quality was valued in Regency interiors for its harmonious coloration and its architectural approach to ornament. Both saucers present beautifully, with one showing only a faint, unobtrusive stain consistent with early use. Dimensions: 5.5" diameter Condition: Very good antique condition; one saucer with a faint age-related stain. Price: $260 Decoration: Molded neoclassical grapevine border in low relief. Material: Caneware stoneware. Style: Regency, with neoclassical ornament. Origin: England, Wedgwood. Date: Circa 1810. Notable Details: Pair of early Wedgwood Caneware saucers Continuous molded border of vines, grapes, and classical foliage Warm colored stoneware body typical of the period Clean surfaces with only a faint stain on one saucer A refined example of Wedgwood’s neoclassical approach to everyday wares
