Handsome Native American black pottery dish by Santa Clara artist Ethel Gutierrez-Yazza. It is in wonderful vintage condition with no chips, cracks or chiggers. Please see photos, circa late 20th century. Here is a fabulous piece of black pottery by Santa Clara Native American artist Ethel (Turquoise Rock) Gutierrez-Yazza. It is gorgeous in its simplicity. Its stone polished finish and simple round shape is free of any decoration but still calls out to be touched. This dish will be fabulous in a display shelf or tablescape no matter your decor. Just make it yours! Ethel “Turquoise Rock” Gutierrez-Yazza was born in 1959 into the Santa Clara-Tewa Pueblo. As a full blooded Native American Indian she was taught all the fundamentals of creating pottery using the ancient traditional methods that were passed down through the generations. Ethel, along with her siblings Effie Garcia, Julie Gutierrez, Sally Gutierrez-Tafoya, and Eugene Gutierrez, specializes in the stone polished black Santa Clara pottery complete with gathering clumps of clay from within the Pueblo. The clay is then soaked and mixed with volcanic ash and other natural elements. At this point it is ready to be hand coiled and formed and shaped into the beautiful well-known vessels and objects. Some are completed with only their wonderful plain finish and other are carved with meaningful carvings including serpents, kiva steps, feathers, and water waves that each symbolize important religious beliefs. All are fabulous. We have fallen in love with this awesome piece and know you will love it too. Make it yours!
