About the Item

This rare six-piece set of antique English creamware, with elegant hand-painted brown trim, was made between the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The highlight of the group is a marked Wedgwood creamware basket with a matching stand, circa 1800, both of which are impressed with the Wedgwood mark. The basket features a pierced, arcaded border and delicate, upturned handles, while the stand complements it with matching details. Another exceptional piece is the leaf-shaped dish, circa 1785, featuring a rare paper label for Wynn Sayman, a well-respected 20th-century dealer in early English pottery, which adds provenance to its charm. Completing the set are two small round plates with brown trim, circa 1810, an oval dish with impressed basketweave design and pierced arcaded border, circa 1810, and a shell-shaped dish by Spode, circa 1810, marked on the reverse. Together, this collection highlights the variety, craftsmanship, and elegance of English creamware. It was created in the mid-1700s by the potters of Staffordshire, England. Thomas Whieldon was one of the foremost pioneers of creamware. He invented a wide variety of decorations for creamware. The young Josiah Wedgwood partnered with Thomas Whieldon from 1754 to 1759. When Wedgwood left to set up his own business, he immediately directed his efforts to develop creamware.
